Take-downs: the Double-Leg

The CMD system strongly emphasizes remaining in the stand-up game for several reasons. In a self defense situation, you don't want to be on the ground as unlike training mats, the ground in the real world is often hard and unforgiving but perhaps more importantly, it leaves you vulnerable to multiple attackers. Take-downs are generally quite committal moves where if it isn't successful, it tends to leave you in a vulnerable position.

That being said, take-downs do remain an essential part of any martial artist's repertoire as executed properly, it can easily put you in a position to get away or gives you options when you are being overwhelmed by a superior stand-up fighter. Learning to execute a proper take-down also ensures that your partner gets proper training in learning take-down defenses.

Yesterday we focused on the double leg take-down. These are my notes from yesterday's session:

As a general rule, don't just directly go for a take-down, set it up with strikes to the head to distract before going in for the take-down.
Make sure you're close enough to do it, and you should be at rim-shot range.
After striking, level change first by dropping your body to a lower level and bending the knees, then shoot in by driving your lead foot between the gap in his legs.
Using cupped hands, aim for the back of the thighs above the knees and lift and pull.
Lift with your legs (not your back). Back must be kept straight and not stooped forward to make sure that you are not lifting with your back which is more difficult and can result in injury.
Head is placed on the side of his body, below the armpit area and is in the opposite side of the leg that stepped through.
As you lift, start turning over his legs in the direction that your lead leg is in while using your head to also push into his body to help the take-down along. You want to imagine lifting and then rotating him in one smooth movement as if you're picking up a oil drum full of water and dumping the water to the side.
The rotation is important to sweep him completely off-balance and ensure that when he lands, he cannot get you into guard.
Remain balanced while doing this and aim to remain standing after the take-down (though if you can get into side-control to move into mount is also good)
When in a mirrored stance, it may be easier to take a step in with the back leg as it allows you to scoop up and lift your partner's already bent front leg.
If your opponent is significantly shorter than you, it might be difficult to go for this take-down due to the extreme level change you would have to do which sacrifices your balance.

Albert's favored method unlike the traditional double leg, doesn't require you to drop your knee down to the ground which in his opinion is impractical as hitting your knee on concrete when you're shooting in quickly isn't so fun. Having your knee drop down does give the takedown a bit more oomph as the take-down is aimed at the legs. However, Albert's slightly squatted position still generates the necessary power lift with the power coming from the legs which also has the advantage that you still remain on your feet even in a failed attempt.

While doing some background reading, I realized that recently the International Judo Federation had banned this technique (morote-gari), most likely due to traditionalists viewing the technique as 'bad judo'. I don't understand why such an effective technique should be banned though Bill Lewis had suggested that it was because it was easy enough for amateurs to do and is not exciting enough for spectators.

Conversely, I think this is the very one reason why this technique has to be studied. Out there, someone may just try to take you down with a similar tackle or a sloppy double leg. Knowing a take-down's mechanics and knowing that you can defend against a proper take-down gives us the necessary tools and mental readiness to deal with it.

Rodney's recent move towards implementing take-down defenses in the Evolutionary Core of his system probably reflects this thinking.

Further working into the clinch and takedowns

We have progressed further into the Evolution Core of CM with the incorporation of more clinch work and takedowns.

My arms have been aching from all this work but it's a nice sort of burn and gives me the feeling that I've got a good workout!

CM's hunchback stance and its squared hip reasoning is reinforced when takedowns are incorporated in. Because of the squared hip, we can readily go into a sprawl position which is very difficult to do from a side facing/blade stance.

And here's a video of the beginning of integration between all elements of the CM E-Core game, takedowns, clinch and boxing. In these sparring videos, we were focusing more on entering into clinch and takedowns hence the reduced boxing. Knees have not been incorporated yet as well.

Be aware of closing off the center line. Do not lose attention.
Remember to get full extension on punches even when moving forward. Switch to 3PC if intending to clinch.
Position hands so they don't get locked up in clinch.
The takedown attempt was not a good idea and left me open to knees nor did it have the necessary driving force to reach. Need to make sure my upper body is more upright if I'm attempting takedown. Especially not a good idea when his hands were already on my head.

A more raised back heel and don't narrow stance too much.
Better use of 3 point Cover.
Smoother entry into a necktie
More fluid combinations.
Better control of speed and pace.
Try not to charge in like a freight train.

Perhaps the most important thing to be taken from this session after consulting with the helpful guys at the CM Pro Gym (thanks guys!), is to be more proactive with the jab even though you might not land.

JAB!!!!! Use your jab to gauge distance. Use your jab to stop them coming forward... he is able to walk in on you because there is nothing holding him back... stiff jab to the face will make his job harder. Secondly when you work your jab, you will then be able to follow with combinations. You both seem to have an 'all or nothing' mentality with the punching, as in if you can't hit the person you don't throw.... the jab is like a blind man's cane, constantly probing to find objects, feeling around and giving feedback to the blind man. It doesn't touch something all the time, but it's looking.

Scott Walker:

Spend some time on getting that jab really working for you and then start to let the cross work its when in naturally. Get your distancing down and control the range with jabs and crosses and get it to happen automatic. In other words, put some time into getting those straight punches to come off with out having to plan it out, such as "I am now going to jab and cross".

Long story short learning to throw a jab that lands a a few inches from their face as I worked my way in and instead finding my range on the second or third jab really helped me. This of course is not done every time because you would become predictable, but I learned a lot from it.

playing the single shooter jab a lot more and really working on being creative with the jab and coming in on all different angles was a lot of help too.

Dempsey Roll

Jack Dempsey, one of the greatest boxers ever pioneered the bob and weave move. Previously boxing was generally bolt upright fashion and Dempsey revolutionized boxing with his innovation of dropping low and attacking from a half crouch position.

In fact, Jack Dempsey would do rounds in a 5 foot cage, forcing him to box in a deep crouch. This drill builds leg strength and endurance and adds explosion to his punches.

I first learned of the 'Dempsey Roll' from an anime: Hajime No Ippo, the bob and weave move which incorporated the natural momentum of the bob and weave into devastating hooks.

Now the real thing from one of the most one-sided fights in history: Jack Dempsey vs Jess Willard.

A bit of background info, Willard, the reigning champion is 6 foot 6 inches and the huge favourite. Dempsey utterly mauled him with his new style of boxing with Willard quitting in round 3 after being knocked down countless amount of times and sustaining broken bones and teeth.

The Dempsey Roll has been since used by early Tyson who used his shorter stature to great effect by ducking under punches and using his enormous punching power to dominate his taller opponents.

The Roll doesn't look quite that effective in a MMA fight as the bob and weave is quite predictable to experienced fighters and it does leave the 'roller' open to quick counterpunches or shoves but it is fascinating nonetheless and is great fun to do!

Fighting the Bounce

The past few lessons I have been focusing on my footwork, where I find that

I bounce too much
My legs often come to close together

After a lot of practice, managed to reduce my bouncing by following suggestions from the CMD Pro Forums and my trainer

Imagine that you're a ninja walking
Always keep at least one foot touching the ground when moving
Practice, practice and practice!

This has improved my footwork a bit but I find that I still slip up when my legs get tired.

Last night I got in two sessions of light sparring with Albert along with the usual tennis match sparring and it felt a lot better.

Several key pointers that I noticed while sparring with Albert:

I was aware of large movements trying to corner me in but when done inch by inch, I often didn't notice I was being cornered until it was too late.
Because of the way Albert positioned his head and his shorter height, when I did manage to contact his head mostly by virtue of my longer reach, it felt difficult to get a solid punch in because of the angle of his head.
I lowered my guard when trying to attack quick. I should not be sacrificing defence for attack at this stage. I got hit in the mouth once because of my carelessness
I don't quite like the Runner style, extremely tiring and I don't like the idea of prancing around my opponent while he takes his time to move in towards me. It also feels less flexible in an environment where you don't always have a lot of room to move. However this may be just due to my lack of conditioning.
MY CONDITIONING IS HORRIBLE. Need to do more running/skipping/cardio activities.

Here's a vid of me struggling in my last spar of the night (I was pretty exhausted already and after a while decided to just stick to defending as I had no energy to throw any meaningful punches so I focused on just keeping a good CM1). I panicked halfway through and got myself mown down as you can see me frantically shuffling my hands in almost pure desperation.

Basrull is showing great improvement and I notice his punches to be more probing and his defense a lot tougher to get into. I'll be so sad when he leaves back to the UK :(.

Our CMD class is growing to a nice number and I hope we can have a more regular set of people coming in!

OS 4.5.0.52 False Alarm

For those of you like me who is always eager to try new Blackberry OSes, please do not be mislead by the announcement that 4.5.0.52 is available via a Sri Lankan provider. As of now, the latest downloadable working build I have tried is 4.5.0.46.

If you look carefully at the screenshot, although the package is 4.5.0.52, the application version is the .37 build.

MSN Messenger Service Has Problems

Some of you using MSN Messenger may or may not have been experiencing this problem today:

"You cannot use Windows Live Messenger at this time because your contact list is not available. Please try again later. Click Help to learn more about your contact list. Error code: 81000378"

This seems to be a recent problem and it's possible that something broke at Microsoft (most likely their contact list server).

Electrical Maintenance on US hosts on Saturday

VPN Servers will be affected significantly starting on Saturday 10 PM Malaysian Time for 3-5 hours as our US datacenter undergoes electrical repairs. Servers should be back up after the maintenance period.

Due to a fire in a Commonwealth Edison vault several weeks ago (view news here) Commonwealth Edison has inspected all transformers in the building. After completing the inspection several transformers will need repairs.

Unfortunately we will be affected and will experience approximately 3 to 5 hours of down time to repair a high voltage elbow on the transformer that supplies power to our facility. Work is scheduled this Saturday February 9th starting around 8:00 am CST.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. While we are disappointed in having this downtime it is understandable to fix the problem now to avoid the possibility of a larger problem in the future.

Seedbox 1 Upgrade Complete

Seed box...hu hu hu

Seedbox Upgrade now has been completed and is now running on a E2180 :D We're negotiating for the upgrade of Seedbox 2 as well.

For those of you who haven't been following, here's a nutshell of what happened yesterday:

Seedbox 1 went down several times in a space of a few hours and we looked into it.
Network hosts acknowledge there was a problem on their network which was resolved
Seedbox 1 still went down and we did a hardware check and discovered that the processor provided was not of the specs we thought they were on
Network hosts deny that we ordered those specs
Contacted CEO of host and showed him correspondence and pointed out that their ad was misleading
Network hosts kindly agree to upgrade Seedbox 1 (which we have clear evidence of ordering it as a Pentium D instead of the supplied Celeron 420 single core) at no extra cost.
Upgrade took place and service was restored.

We are still monitoring the situation and we apologize for the inconvenience.

I have added 1 day of credit to all Seedbox 1 users although this was really beyond our control.

This has already been added.

Seedbox 1 Issues

Update 8:21 PM

After negotiations, our host has agreed to upgrade the processor for Seedbox 1 and will proceed with this as soon as they can. You may experience interrupted connectivity while this happens.

Update 5.00 PM:

Seedbox 1 and 2 are up but we are still monitoring it as we are still working with the hosts to identify the problem.

For those who have our numbers do sms us if you have issues with SB1.

Update 3.00 PM:

When we were recompiling rtorrent, the server died AGAIN.
The FTP is back up but we are contemplating doing an overhaul so grab whatever files you need from there ASAP.

I'll give you all an additional day of credit.

Update 12.00 PM:

Seedbox 1 rtorrent will be going down for upgrades and also we note that there is another problem with the hardware on this server. It was promised as a Pentium D and it turns out to be a Celeron 1.6 ghz Conroe single core....

We're upgrading the rtorrent first and see what they propose on the compensation.

For those of you who are on Seedbox 1, we note there was an outage. The explanation provided by our hosts is as below:

New OpenVPN Release Candidate is out!

A new OpenVPN Release Candidate is out and we have not tested it on either client or server systems yet and therefore unable to recommend it yet. It is unlikely to improve performance but it might solve some compatibility issues with Vista so if you are having problems there, you might want to give it a try.

Most of our users are either using the stable 2.09 release or Release Candidate 4.

In other news...I had a nightmare weekend with:

My Gigabyte P35-DS3R breaking down with it unable to detect any of my drives
Buying a new Asus P5KR while waiting for the RMA of the Gigabyte only to realize the board I got was faulty when I fully installed it
Finally replaced it again with a 1 to 1 return and have everything work.
USB Logitech G11 keyboard doesn't play that nice upon bootup forcing me to whip out my PS2 keyboard to configure BIOS options.
Only to realize that my Razer Copperhead is broken.
And that my WoW levelling partner does not want to play his lowbie character with me anymore.

Lessons to be learnt from this weekend:

Do not buy motherboards with tons of revisions (especially my Gigabyte P35-DS3R which was revision 1.0 and now there's revision 2.0 and 2.1). AVOID AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!
Do not buy motherboards (the Gigabyte one) whose BIOS settings only give you AUTO to +0.2v, 0.4v, 0.6 v...like wth..where is the NORMAL voltage and give me a figure dammit.
Auto OC in a motherboard is a STUPID feature.
Asus' Front panel connectors (Q-Connector) are a God-send.
That being said why can't front panel connectors be standard. Geez.
Always keep your receipts and boxes for your part purchases no matter how little space you have in your cupboards.
The most expensive cutting edge mouse is not necessarily the most reliable one (a lesson I did not learn as I just bought a Boomslang CE just cause it was sexy)
USB Keyboards are overrated until BIOS catches up :P
Not to buy games because 'yer friends promise to level up with you and have fun' unless you really want to play it yourself.

Why can't all motherboards have this?

Computer shopper's review sums it up nicely:

Call of Duty 4 Server updated to patch 1.5

Our Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare is currently being updated to patch 1.5 and should be up within an hour or two.

CHANGES:

Fixed server browser not showing all of the servers

The "hold [ ] to steady" sniper scope hint will only appear if you can use it

Fixed game not recognizing IWDs existing if they are all in fs_basepath and none are in the main/ folder

Made mod scripts able to change stats

Allow developer_script for mulitiplayer modding

Fixed map rotation errors with usermaps

Fix for reloading several times after connecting to a modded server

Fixed minimap not showing up in the menu for usermaps

Fixed an issue with Http redirect downloads.

Mod tools will now work with other languages

Service Restored and Apologies from the Host

The hosts have confirmed that the problems should have been fixed.

We have technicians who have been working to resolve the problems we experienced this morning, i hope that this will be a perminent fix to the problem. We are also putting new hardware in place to strengthen our data center redundancy to prevent future outages like we experienced this morning.

We'll see... :D

BolehRoute has been corrupted from the power outage and we are contemplating ditching the server and devoting our efforts to bringing the new and improved BolehRoute up which should be up by tomorrow.

UK Server Issues

We are experiencing issues with our UK servers which include our Seedboxes.

As a result, a small minority of you might be unable to access the VPN while this issue is being rectified. Also seedboxes are offline as well.

It appears to be a host related issue and we have already sent a support ticket for their review.

Update 11.27PM Yer Momma so fat she got hijacked!

Most UK servers have restored connectivity except Yermomma and BolehRoute.
BolehRoute server is still down for some unknown reason probably due to the intermittent problems of the host while Yermomma's IP has been hijacked probably due to their technical fault on the host's side.

Yes hijacked...When we try to login into the server, the server prompt is a totally different one which shows a totally different OS. Go figure. :D Way to go hosts!

Will look to slowly phase out using these hosts when we can.

Update: 12.26 AM Yer Momma is now online

Hosts have restored the connection.

The server that had taken you IP address has been taken offline.

International Link Outage at 2.30 AM last night

Malaysian Connectivity Outage

There was a brief international link outage in Malaysia at 2.30 AM last night resulting in a loss of connectivity for about an hour.

We are also still receiving reports that certain IP ranges still encounter issues and high loss rates when connecting to international sites. This was apparently due to an international link error which had been rectified yesterday but for some reason, this 'fix' has not been reflected in several IP ranges.

Tech Support at TM advised us to e-mail help@tm.com.my (that's right not .net.my) with ping reports to several international sites (not including google since it has a Singapore server), your Streamyx username and current IP address to help their techs resolve the issue as they are aware of the problem.

Good sites to ping:

cnn.com
bbc.co.uk
youtube.com
facebook.com
202.188.0.133 (to test local connectivity)

To do pings under Windows, open up Start, Run, Type cmd, type ping cnn.com -n 10. Replace cnn.com with the other sites above to try the rest.

To copy, right click the window, Mark and then select and press enter. Paste with ctrl v.

Sarawak "Waiting for Response" error

In Sarawak, certain lines at around 12.30 AM also experienced a loss of connectivity from Streamyx which gave a DSL light but the authentication process would no go past the 'Waiting for Response" stage, a problem which was acknowledged by TM and from morning reports, the problem seems to have been resolved.

Ken Server Upgrade Completed

We have also fully upgraded to a newer OS Ken and it is ready to take connections.

Kusanagi Completes its Upgrades

You are welcome to populate this server as its usage is very low at the moment.

These upgrades are in line with our plan to steadily bring all our servers up with the latest OS fixes for performance and stability improvements.

So the Boleh Community finally joins the blog bandwagon!

It seems that the Announcements section isn't too effective in getting the message across so we'll be testing using a blog format to post important matters and keep you updated not just on Boleh Development and Status but also on random things we found interesting!

MALAYSIAN ISP CONNECTIVITY REMAINS PATCHY

Connectivity to international sites remains patchy with some areas having recovered while others still experiencing abysmal speeds.

Up till today, there hasn't been any official response on the matter except that they are experiencing problems (if you call their hotline).

Our suggestion is to keep on reconnecting to your ISP and get a different IP range and test your results via pings to google.

BOLEHVPN AND BOLEHROUTE UPGRADES

We are upgrading our server's OSes in stages for BolehVPN and as such there would be rolling restarts. You might experience short disconnections not lasting more than half an hour while the servers are being upgraded.

BolehRoute will be moved to a different host with a more flexible setup offering a greater number of ports and if possible a dedicated IP for each user! We currently are able to take 48 BolehRoute users.
